Evaluation: Question 1

Here i have compared stills from our final product and the opening scene of Arlington Road.

Here the stills in Arlington Road are inverted but we have a clear still image but have changed the color to red. Our still here seems more calm as it is a close up of leaves swaying where as Arlington road's clip is fast cutting to make it more scary.

As you can see, we both used black fonts onto a pale background. Arlington Road’s title is simple and bold whereas we opted for a more unique type font to coincide with the atmosphere of our tile sequence.

In these stills, The Grove has a pink background which is also but Arlington road has a dark background. The Grove’s title is much more bigger than Arlington Roads. Also in this still, the size of the surname is bigger than the forename.

Here we have visual similarities, as we got inspiration of the panning of gates in Arlington Road. Arlington road has a shadow of the gates whereas ours is red. Arlington road looks more sinister it has a blood red type colour.

Another visual similarity is the still of the road names. We both have effects on the stills. In The Grove, we added noise which makes it more pixilated

Here we both added stills of a dog. We were unable to have it as close up as the still in Arlington Road but managed to film one.

Both of our stills are on a black background as it is the title of the film. The grove is centred in the middle to make it clear.

Evaluation- Question 6- What have you learned about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Blogger was one of the websites that I used the most in the creation of our sequence. It is where I recorded all the steps and the process of the creation, and therefore was always a referal.

Art of the title sequence was used briefly when brainsorming for inspiration. It has a wide selection of title sequences to choose from.

Final Cut pro was a programme which greatly helped towards the creation of our sequence. It is where all the editing of the title sequence was done.

Livetype pro is a software which was used to create the titles. Despite many attempts on different titles, we finally created the erroded styled titles that appear on the sequence. The programme allowed us to play around with effects.

Photofunia is a website we used for 'advertising' our title sequence. It allowed me to upload screengrabs from our title sequence or any other image, and super impose the image onto a wide range of photos such as billboards, magazines and leaflets etc.

Soundtrack pro was an essential programme to the creation of our title sequence. It worked by allowing us to watch the title sequence in the left hand top corner, and therefore create timed cohesivness between the sequence and the created composition of sound.

Evaluation- Question 7- Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learned in the progression from it to the full product?

Looking back at our preliminary task, I can see a visual progress. Whereas before we only began learning how to u se a tripod and the camera, that inexperience is reflected in the technique of filming i.e. unstable shots and also obvious shots. Despite not having many people for our final production, which therefore restricts some of the shots we can do, we managed to include a wide range of shots such as match cut, jump cuts and stedi cam technique and excecute it in a professional manner. The combination of editing, good filming and well planned shots, our final production has an overall professional and well excecuted edge, that our preliminary task did not.

Evaluation- Question 1- In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Arlington Road - The Grove

Both the producer's name from Alrington Road's title sequence and our title sequence are both basic images as backgrounds with white font on top. Alrington Road's title are basic, capitals which work well as the simplicity of the titles do not create distraction from the title sequence itself. In contrast, ours is a more erroded, distressed title font which is cohesive with the dysfunctional feel of our title sequence. The differences are quite obvious in the fonts as one is basic and in block-form whereas the other is slightly more dysfunctional.

There are great similarities between the two clips as they both feature white font against a simple background.

Both of these shots feature font of a small scale against a faded background of an image.

In both of these shots, the directors name is placed on top of quite a vivid and dysfunctional image.

There is a obvious visual similarity between the two shots. They both feature a roads name on a road sign from a low angle. However the colouring of the two are at opposite ends of the spectrum, as one is a grayscale whereas the other is red.

The similar comparison between these two shots is that they both are basic white font against a black background and they both were placed at the end of the title sequence.

The visual similarity between the two shots are the dogs. However, the dog shot from Arlington Road is depicted in a more artistic and abstract manner, whereas 'The Grove' captures the dog in a more effective way (as he is caught staring at the camera)

The visual similarities between these three shots is that they all feature a gate in a different colour scale, red, orange and grayscale.

Evaluation: Question 7

Here is a presentation i made the differences between our preliminary task and our final product.

Evaluation- Question 5- Who would be the audience for your media product?

5) Who would be the audience for your media product?
The typical target audience member of our film would be a young male….
Being very techno-savvy, the contents of their ‘manbag’ would be technology-orientated. For example, they would probably have some form of a Smartphone i.e. an iPhone or a Blackberry, as this is not only a reflection of being techno-savvy, but also Smartphone’s hold a status of high importance. It is likely they carry an Mp3 or a laptop, or some technological device. Ideally, they would wear a watch to symbolize practicality and time- insinuating they have many upcoming events. They would be interested in currently successful films such as Arlington Road, Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘Shadow of a Doubt’ and iRobot and therefore our film would target them on a mass appeal as it shares similar elements with each film. A character summary for the demographic would be; James is a 22 year old who lives in fashionable Shoreditch, and works in advertising. He is quite fashion consious and reasonably intrested in sports. He reads alot and is interested in current affairs. On Friday after work, he goes to the Slug and Lettuce in Islington and once every other week goes to Glassworks in Angel.

Evaluation-Question 2- How does your media product represent particular social groups?

2) How does your media product represent particular social groups?
Our media product does not represent a social group as it is not very specific to any individuals. It is not gender or age specific and can therefore appeal to a wider demographic. Within the whole of the title sequence, there are only two characters which are featured for a reasonable amount of time. There is the man taking out the rubbish who seems affluent, middle class and well groomed. He is seen stepping out of his conventional, middle class surburban house and walking past his expensive cars to his neatly lined rubbish bins. In contrast is the man who is seen suffocating in a bin bag. He is depicted as sweaty, frantic and in a state of panic. There is not much background information one can draw from the character apart from the fact he is in whatr appears to be a horrible situation.

Evaluation: Question 6

Here a a number of presentation i have made on what I've learnt about techologies from the process of constructing this product

Final Cut Pro

Livetype

Research and Planning

JVC Camera

SoundTrack Pro
Soundtrack pro helped us with giving the sinister atmosphere of our opening scene which is what we wanted. We were able to produce diegetic sound; such as the footsteps when nigel was walking, breathing when Nahuel was in the bag and the walkie talkie sound during the clip of the CCTV camera. We were also able to create the right music played throught the tile sequence succesfully as there was a wide range of music. We wanted to keep it simple yet give the distorted feel across to the audience.

Evaluation: Question 8

Here are some responses to our title sequence The Grove.

I was very pleased with comments made about the film, we were able to show how Arlington Road inspired us in making our title sequence.

Evaluation: Question 5

I think the type of audience that will be watching our film is a young man whose 20 years of age. He is a media student so is intrested in films such as ours and Arlington Road, he is technically savvy and has a social life aswell as reading mystery novels in his spare time.

Evaluation: Question 2

Since our title sequence The Grove was based on Arlington Road. There was no dialogue between the characters used in the scene. But there is a mysterious connection between the two.

This character represents a resident living in the area we filmed. As you can see, he is smartly
dressed which reflects on the area he lives in, which is a suburban u
pper class area.

This character is the link between the above character. He is in a plastic bag which makes

audience curious to weather it's Nigel who's taken him out in the bag.

Evaluation: Question 3&4

If we were to relase our thriller film, i think the companies that will help in producing would be working title. Its not one of the big 6, but will be able to help us produce our film. As we are a low budget film, we would be realeasing it in independant cinemas such as:
The Screen On The Green:

This cinema is situation in inslington green that shows independant and foreign films of good quality as most cinemas tend to just show blockbuster films. It has a good reputation for showing good films. We we be able to asure good reviews as the audiences will be people who are into good films and doesn't ignore independant films like ours.

Ritzy cinema:
This cinema has been opened for 100 years. It is a very well-known cinema situated in Brixton, South london. Aswell as showing independant films, it also has music venues. By showing our film here, it will show the quality of the film because it is a well-known cinema and also bring in wide audience.

Rio cinema:
This cinema has also been opened fore more than 100 years. Its a popular cinema and has devloped into a cinema that gone into it's own route unlike mainstream cinemas and welcomes films such as independant films and have intrests in the community that have been ignored. Such as cultural fesitvals. We will be able to make alot of profit in this cinema of it being shown here.

Marketing
We would be marketing the film through advertisments such as

Billboards:
By advertising it we are able to promote the film as it will everyone will be able to look at he advert. We will be able to pull in a wide audience that can enable us to have a big profit intake.

Magazines:
We would be advertising it in magazines that are for a wide audience but a magainzine that
men mainly read. By doing this we can get in audience we know who would enjoy this.

Evaluation question 8: audience feedback

Evaluation question 7: Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learned in the progression from it to the full product?

  • Editing - in the preliminary exercise we used a few editing methods. One of these were match cuts that I thought we executed pretty well. In the final product we used quite a lot of different editing techniques, including match cut, cross cut and jump cut. In addition to these editing techniques we used quite a few special effects that heightened the mood we had created for our final product.

  • Camera - We did use a variety of shots in the prelim but in the final product we used a wider variety of shots. These shots included ECUs MS, LS, the LS contrasted well with the ECUs. We also used camera movements including tilts pans and zooms.

  • Sound - In the prelim we used sound from the camera which was of poor quality. So in the final product we decided to not use diegetic sound directly from the camera mic. Our title sequence was mostly music with bits of diegetic sound effects put placed in the post production process such as, the breathing and the footsteps.
  • Mise en scene - Our prelim had aProxy-Connection: keep-alive
    Cache-Control: max-age=0

the mise en scene ready because it was set in college but in the final product we worked hard to try use mise en scene to our advantage. We used smart clothing, wealthy surroundings and big houses to create the impression of a wealthy sub-urban

Evaluation question 6: What have you learned about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Evaluation question 5: Who would be the audience for your media product?

As shown from my montage of images the main target audience will be male, quite fashionable and also quite intelectual. A lifestyle summary for a person that would watch this move: Richard, 24, Manager at Burtons menswear, hobbies include watching films, socialising and reading. Favourite genres of films are: action, thrillers and some comedy. Likes to wear designer clothes and is very fashionable, drives a car. Favourite pieces of technology, laptop and ipod.

Evaluation 3&4) What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? How will you attract/address your audience?

I found an opening title sequence that was made by other AS media students last year which they uploaded onto youtube. They have had quite alot of views since they put it up, they are almost reaching 2000. I looked through many student thriller opening title sequences, among all the other videos this was one that stood out to me and i think they executed their task very well. They use an excellent variation of camera angles and the story line is gripping and the acting isn't too bad. They have used a good flash back technique and the contrasting black and white effect is used sets the mood of the film. Another thing i also admire is the dark desaturated effect that they have used throughout to create the "film look".

They have been able to reach a wide audience audience through use of the internet by uploading it to youtube. They might have posted it on various social networking sites and sent the links on email or embedded the video on their personal website. Through all these forms f marketing they have been able to reach a diverse international audience, anyone anywhere in the world can see their video on youtube, This makes this a very good way of distributing their film due to the lack of having an actual film budget.

This is the Title sequence I found on youtube. It is called The Abduction

Another way of distributing our film could be through a distribution company, As we used working title as our distributor on our title sequence we could use them to be our distributors.
If we were to use this way of distributing our film, we could use similar ways to how they distributed shaun of the dead. It could be released as one of their "experimental" films.
It could be advertised through billboards and posters in public places where it would attract a big audience. Also it could be advertised through facebook, youtube, and other websites that will get a lot of views and also in magazines that are read by our main target audience.

The type of cinemas that would exhibit our film will be independent cinemas such as:

Screen on the green

Ritzy
